The Philosophy of the United States Development Academy

The Academy Program's philosophy is based on increased training, less total but more meaningful games using international rules of competition. The Development Academy will promote a holistic approach to soccer development highlighting respect, lifestyle, and personal responsibility. Click here

Meaningful Training

Consistent Meaningful training

U.S Development Academy teams spend a greater amount of time focused on training to improve players as individuals and collectively as a team. The U.S Soccer Development program provides the optimal developmental environment for elite youth soccer players through four (4) mandatory training sessions per week. Click here

Player I.D.

Player identification and development:

Since the inception of the Development Academy in 2007, the Development Academy has dramatically impacted the player identification and development process in the United States. 24 Academy alumni have earned Men's National Team call-ups, 1,250 Academy players earned Youth National Team call-ups, over 120 Development Academy alumni have played in Major League Soccer, and approximately another 50 alumni at professional environments overseas. In the 2014-15 Development Academy season Development Academy events are premier scouting venues for players to be identified for U.S. Soccer Training Centers and Youth National Teams. Approximately 2,100 Academy games have been scouted by the U.S. Soccer Men's Scouting Network. Click here

Competitive Games

Competitive games

The Development Academy program features teams from the top youth clubs from across the country. To ensure all games are meaningful while shifting away from a results-driven philosophy, each Academy team plays 30 regular season games against other Academy teams. The Development Academy has implemented a 25 percent minimum start requirement. Games are also played according to FIFA’s Laws of the Game (i.e. no reentry on substitutions, Jan. 1 birthday cutoff) and are officiated by a pool of the nation’s top referee’s in order to prepare players for the next level of competition. Click here
